About Modo Energy Media
Modo Energy is launching Modo Energy Media - the home for all of Modo Energy’s free-to-view educational content, including:
- Transmission - our podcast, featuring interviews with the people leading the energy transition.
- The Energy Academy- our flagship educational video series, explaining how power markets work around the world.
- Other (tbd) evergreen energy explainer/documentary videos or series - that break down complex topics for a wide audience.
This will sit separately from Modo Energy Research, where we provide subscriber-only market analysis.
We're on a mission to make power markets, energy storage, and decarbonization understandable, engaging, and accessible - through world-class media production.
Now, we’re looking for a Head of Media to lead, scale, and elevate our content to rival the best in business media.
The role:
We need a strategic and creative leader to take full ownership of Modo Energy Media’s podcasts and video production - from high-level editorial strategy, to hands-on execution and workflow management.
You’ll set the vision, build scalable processes, and lead a small team of talented video creators to produce polished, high-quality, and engaging educational content.
We want our content to match the quality of top-tier business and science media - think Vox, Bloomberg, WSJ, The Economist, Real Vision, Morning Brew, Acquired, etc..
But this is not just a management role - you will also get your hands dirty in production, ensuring everything we release is punchy, polished, and insightful.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and strategy
- Own and define the creative and editorial vision for Modo Energy Media across our podcasts and video series.
- Shape our brand identity in educational video and podcast content - making it accessible, engaging, and high-quality.
- Manage, mentor, and upskill a small team of junior video producers - raising the bar on production quality and efficiency.
- Work closely with the Modo Energy Research team to align storytelling with market trends and audience needs.
Podcast production
- Lead the creative direction of Transmission (our flagship podcast), ensuring it follows best practices of the world’s most engaging interview podcasts.
- Manage guest outreach/booking, pre-production, recording, editing, and distribution - to maximize reach and engagement.
- Optimize audio quality, format, and pacing to match world-class standards.
Video production
- Lead the production of The Energy Academy - developing engaging, educational video content that breaks down complex topics.
- Oversee video filming, editing, and animation - ensuring videos have a clear narrative and strong visual identity.
- Manage studio setups, talking head shots, and motion graphics to create a polished final product.
Execution
- Define and implement workflows for video and podcast production, improving consistency and efficiency.
- Continuously analyze performance (YouTube, podcast platforms, and on Modo Energy Media itself) to refine content strategy.
- Optimize distribution and marketing across platforms.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in video production and/or podcasting - ideally in business, science, or educational media.
- Proven track record of producing high-quality podcasts and/or video content (please include portfolio/examples!).
- Deep understanding of storytelling, editing, and production workflows - you know what makes content engaging.
- Experience managing and mentoring junior creators, improving their skills and workflows.
- Strong technical knowledge of:
- Video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects for motion graphics).
- Audio editing (Audition, Pro Tools, or similar).
- Podcast recording setups (both remote and in-studio).
Bonus skills
- Background in journalism, finance, energy markets, or business media.
- Experience working at Vox, Bloomberg, The Economist, WSJ, Real Vision, Morning Brew, Acquired, or similar outlets.
- Experience with data visualization or motion graphics.
- Familiarity with SEO and audience growth tactics for podcasts and video.
Important Details
- For New York Applicants, the salary range for this position is 150 - 200k per year.
- We work in a Hybrid Environment: You split your time between working from home and working in our New York office (Tuesday - Thursday)
- 25 days annual leave and your birthday off; medical, dental and vision benefits; 401k with optional matching contribution.
