About Castelion
Castelion is bringing a new approach to defense development and production: one that focuses on short, iterative design cycles, rapid testing in development, and modern commercial manufacturing strategies for production at scale. Were designing, building, and testing next generation long range strike weapons systems to give America and its Allies a definitive edge and deter future conflicts.
Senior Radar SW Engineer
Castelion is seeking a high performing senior SW engineer to lead development of radar seeker software. This is a hybrid leader/doer role, where you will ultimately be responsible for delivery of SW builds, and you get to start from a mostly blank slate. As owner of radar SW, youll determine how to utilize the existing skills on the team as well as augment with more hires. The Castelion radar team already includes high performing algorithm developers with SW skills, so this will NOT be a throw it over the wall software coding approach. Youll be an active developer in the code base, which affords you the opportunity to learn about advanced techniques for maximizing the performance of low-cost radars. A successful candidate will already have opinions from their prior experience regarding how to organize and execute in a fast-paced, rapid iteration environment.
Responsibilities
- SW Development Plan. Take ownership of creating a written, mutable SW Dev Plan that describes our high-level approach to delivering SW builds on time. Identify the different environments/use-cases where SW will be required, including a list of both primary and secondary objectives. Define what it means for SW to be tested, including the approach for CI/CD. Describe how different parts of the Castelion team (which includes subcontractors and consultants) will work together. Describe how the radar data infrastructure ties in with SW infrastructure. Describe the external system interfaces and how the radar will be brought up and tested at the next higher assembly level. Describe how code will be configuration managed, how builds will get created/verified, how telemetry will be captured, and how data could be replayed offline to generate the same results as online. Describe the approach for built in test (BIT), including startup BIT, periodic BIT, externally initiated BIT.
- Define SW Architecture. Castelion will consider heterogenous compute solutions that could include FPGAs, ASICs, CPUs, GPUs, DSPs, etc. The radar SW lead is responsible for creating a written, mutable description of how those components work together to accomplish the mission. It describes, at a high level, how functions are assigned to compute resources and the interfaces between those resources. The architecture also includes a written description of the approach to cybersecurity, power-up sequencing, fault recovery, reprogramming, telemetry, tailoring builds, updating calibration coefficients, etc.
- Oversee SW Development. The radar SW lead is responsible for ensuring that the SW tasks required to achieve milestones are assigned & tracked. The radar SW lead is expected to be the most active reviewer of PRs. They are responsible for enforcement of the written plans, tailoring of those plans as needed, verifying documentation artifacts are being created, and unblocking other developers when they encounter infrastructure/process problems. The radar SW lead will be actively monitoring performance metrics (throughput, utilization, stability, etc.). They will also report to the radar lead regarding performance and execution status.
- Lead Team in Fast-Paced Environment. Castelion prioritizes a high frequency test cadence over large, capstone demonstrations. As the radar SW lead, you will be responsible for creating the ecosystem that enables this cadence
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in electrical engineering or computer science
- 10+ years of experience in SW development
- Must have some experience leading a group of SW developers
- Experience with radar preferred but not required
Leadership Qualities
Bias to Action and Creative Problem Solving. Desire and experience questioning assumptions in ways that lead to break through ideas that are ultimately implemented. Successfully bring in applicable processes/concepts/materials from other industries to achieve efficiency gains. Ability to personally resolve minor issues in development without requiring significant support.
High Commitment, High Initiative. A successful candidate will have a genuine passion for Castelions mission and consistently look for ways to contribute to the companys technical goals and prevent hardware blockers. Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere. Strong sense of accountability and integrity.
Clear Communicator. Proactively communicates blockers. Trusted in previous roles to be voice of company with regulators, suppliers, gate keepers and customers. Capable of tactfully managing relationships with stakeholders to achieve company-desired outcomes without compromising relationships. Emails, IMs and verbal interactions are logical, drive clarity, and detailed enough to eliminate ambiguity.
