Upvest, founded in 2017, enables any financial institution to offer great investment experiences to its customers. Upvest is an investment firm regulated by the German supervision authority (BaFin). The company currently employs 160+ people across Europe with its headquarters based in Berlin, Germany.
The company is backed by the world’s largest venture capital funds and investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, BlackRock, Earlybird, HV Capital, Notion Capital, and ABN Amro Ventures, as well as by renowned fintech entrepreneurs (including Maximilian Tayenthal, founder of N26, and Felix Haas, founder of IDnow).
We’re looking for fintech enthusiasts to join us in creating the financial infrastructure of tomorrow. We’re building the first European Investment API to enable any financial institution offering a wide range of efficient and transparent investment products, such as stocks and ETFs in nominal, portfolio, and fractional form. Our mission and vision is to make investing as easy as spending money.
We’re based in Berlin but would consider hiring remotely in Germany for this role. If you do want to move to Berlin though, we’re happy to support your relocation.
Team's mission:
Upvest has entered a phase of strong growth with substantial daily business. Currently this is driven by a number of prime fintech clients but will soon be enhanced by more classic banks / enterprise clients. In parallel, the range of ISINs and asset classes and therefore operational complexity is quickly increasing. So far the Operations team does not have a dedicated Operational Tax expert and all questions in relation to operational tax are handled by the existing BAU teams with support from Product and operations management.
We will fill the role of Senior Tax SME to ensure that all topics in relation to operational tax have a clear owner going forward.
This role will give you the opportunity to:
- Own all topics in relation to operational tax within Upvest. This includes but is not limited to the following areas
QI / FATCA
Corporate Actions in all variations
Buy/Sell of shares, ETF, mutual funds as well as other asset classes
Policies and procedures
- Specifically on QI and FATCA
Ensure compliance with QI and FATCA regulations including managing QI and FATCA status
Manage QI and FATCA reporting requirements and ensure timely submission of relevant reports
Liaise with internal and external auditors regarding QI and FATCA matters
- Specifically on Corporate Actions
Manage the tax implications of corporate actions, including dividends, stock splits, mergers and acquisitions
Ensure accurate and timely tax treatment of corporate actions in line with local and international tax law
Coordinate with the Corporate Actions team to identify and address and tax-related issues
Develop, maintain and own comprehensive tax operations policies, procedures and documentation within Upvest and provide guidance to the operations team in how to deal with tax questions in their daily work
Collaborate closely with Product and other departments to ensure tax compliance across all areas of Upvest and specifically the Upvest platform
Monitor changes in operational tax regulations and ensure Upvest remains compliant
Manage relationships with external tax advisors and regulatory bodies where relevant
Job requirements:
Thorough understanding of global tax regulations (QI, FATCA, etc) and specifically German requirements
Proven track record of owning and driving operational tax matters in financial organisations in a SME or manager position
Strong communication skills in English and German
Excellent analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills
Self-starter, well organised and able to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
Proactive approach to staying updated with regulatory changes
Meticulous attention to detail
Remote work is fine, expectation is to be spending the monthly “Operations onsite week” of about 3 days with the team in Berlin
